Create a multi-spread version of a New York Times Magazine Article using the principles of typography and grid layouts to effectively communicate and tell a story as well as create hierarchy.
Stage 1: Choose An Article
I ended up going with the article "How Does The Human Soul Survive Atrocity? A hard hitting article about the effects of ISIS occupation and war on the mental health of the Iraqi populace.

It was a dark, heavy, emotional article and I wanted to capture the feeling in the way I portrayed the article
Stage 2: Opening Spreads
The first round was all about exploration. Just get as many concepts into InDesign as you can. I ended up refining #2, #4, and #8
Then we moved on to refining our opening spreads to get to a more finished stage
For the final spread I decided I wanted to focus on the people in the article. So I blurred out all the words from the title except "human soul" and went with the one photo of the little girl
Stage 3: The Other Spreads
The last part of the project was to create the spreads that actually have the text of the article. For my first round of spreads I wanted the people to be the focus of the article. I wanted to show as many of the pictures of the people as I could
For my revised spreads I dropped the black boxes around my pull quotes to better blend them with the text. I also played with the size of the images to create more tension.
The final step was to justify and clean up the text and align everything to a baseline grid to make it look nice and tidy.
